Think You Can’t Create Your Own Info Product? Think Again!

Everyone who gets into internet marketing will at some point have considered releasing their own info product. The majority stop at the consideration stage.  Why is that and how do you push through that barrier?

Why Create Your Own Product?

Product creation is one of the most successful internet business models around. In fact many marketers would tell you it is by far the best business model and the only one you should focus on.

The first major benefit is that you can allow affiliates to promote your product. You create your product, sales page and delivery system just once and in return tens, hundreds or thousands of affiliates try to sell your product for you. They pay for the advertising, generating traffic to your sales page and promoting your product to their lists. As an individual you would struggle to have the resources or the opportunity to promote to such a wide ranging audience.

Secondly, you have a resource which you can leverage over time. For example, once the sales have slowed down for your product, you could use it as an incentive to build a list or offer it as a bonus for other products.

Thirdly, it is your product so you have total control over the quality of it and the quality of customer service. This may not seem like a benefit but if you promote other peoples’ products as an affiliate, you have no control over how the customers are treated after purchasing. It could reflect badly on you.

Lastly, if you also build a list of the people who buy your products, you have what is known as a ‘buyers list.’ This is worth a 100 times more (at least) than a list where you offered a free product to get subscribers. Why? Because you know these buyers are willing to spend money and if they like your product, they are likely to buy more stuff from you.

Okay, I’m Convinced But It Looks Difficult

Looks can be deceiving, as my Mum used to tell me. To sell your own info product, you need 4 basic parts :

  • A product (duh?!)
  • A sales page
  • A download or thank you page
  • A payment processor

That’s it! If you have those 4 parts you can sell your product. In fact, with only those 4 parts you can also have affiliates sell your product for you which is the biggest benefit of creating your own product.

The sales page and download page are just two web pages. You can create them in any content management system or use any web development software. The sales page is where you let people know what your product is about, why they need it and what the benefits are. The download page is where you make the product available to your customers with a link to your ebook or videos.

You have many options available for a payment processor and there is no upfront cost. You usually pay a small percentage of the sale.

You could use Paypal directly but that doesn’t have a built-in affiliate system. This would be the cheapest way if you don’t want affiliates.

If you do want affiliates though, sites such as Digiresults, JVZoo, Warriorplus and Clickbank deal with the payment itself and the affiliate commissions.

Oh yes, the product itself. If you have ever bought a product that is informational rather than software based, you must realise that actually producing the product can be fairly simple.

There are a lot of people who make a good living from selling PDF files they created from Word files. You can use free screen recording software to make videos if your budget won’t stretch to a paid version.

Creating the product is not difficult but coming up with the idea is.

No One Would Be Interested In What I Have to Say

This is a common stumbling block but it is completely misguided. A lot of people assume that other people know what they know. Well here is a secret … they don’t!

If you want to create an info product in the internet marketing niche, a great place to start is to document a process which has made you money in the past. It doesn’t matter how simple it is or how much money it made you.

If you have a skill or knowledge in another area which you use on a daily basis, chances are you can write an ebook about it. If you know a particular piece of software really well, no matter what it is, you could create a guide on it. If you are an expert on a computer game, put together some hints and tips.

The point here is that you should start with a topic you know really well.

Summary

There’s no big secret about creating info products. Anyone can start and once you have created one, you will find it easier to create more and start using different mediums.

Each time you can add more to the process such as special offers or pre-launch strategies.

Start making your own info product today. It might be the best decision you ever make!

Yes it’s true, when you actually take a step back it can be surprising to realise just what you do know and what you could create a product about. Something that I’m currently finding invaluable for brainstorming ideas is mindmapping. I’d never even considered using them until recently, but the difference they make is astounding. With my first attempt at messing around with some mindmap software I not only got ideas for one product, but I was getting ideas for three or four all at once!

I’ve never created my own product before and, as mentioned in your post, I didn’t think that I had anything to offer, but now, after doing some brainstorming, I’m surprising myself with what I’m actually coming up with!

It’s good to hear the creative juices are flowing!

I think that first idea is the hardest. As you are working on one, others spring to mind.

Then you have the issue of trying to stay focused on what you are currently working on. This is a big issue for lots of beginners.
